Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainability refers to  continuing for a long time without being disturbed or destroyed. The word sustain is derived from the latin word 'sustin' in which 'sus' means from below and 'tenere' means to hold meaning to keep in existence. Agriculture is the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products. The word agriculture is derived from the latin word 'agricultura' in which ager means field and 'culture' means cultivation or growing. 

Sustainable Agriculture is an agriculture system that satisfy/ fulfill the human need for present and future generations while maintaining and conserving the natural resources and environmental degradation. Sustainable Agriculture should be ecologically sound, economically viable, socially justified, humane and adaptable. Economical sustainability, ecological sustainability and social sustainability are the three pillars of sustainability. Conservation of natural resources: soil, water, air, water, soil, biodiversity conservation, mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change should taken into consideration along with productivity and profitability. 

Sustainable farming system should make the efficient use of both external and internal inputs with optimum utilization of the natural resources with conservation of natural resources, ecological balance, increase in biodiversity and food security. Biodynamic farming, ecological farming, nature farming, organic farming, permaculture are the different modes of sustainable agriculture.
