10 Tips on How To Give Your Room an Eco-friendly Vibe

by Carol Evenson | 02-04-2021 04:48

Your bedroom is a safe space. It is where you sleep, unwind, relax and get ready for your day. Because it is such a special space, you should treat it as such! One way to instantly upgrade the energy in your room is to try and make it more eco-friendly. This can be a fun and rewarding process because not only will you be upgrading your life, you will also be helping the planet. Here are ten tips on how you can cultivate an eco-friendly vibe in your room.

1. Eco-fy Your Bedding

The first place to start when it comes to a room revamp is your bed. This is because, out of all of the furniture in your bedroom, you probably spend the most time in your bed. You want it to be comfortable but also made by a company who focuses on lessening their environmental impact. Another important question to consider is the size of your mattress, what a full vs queen mattress would look like in your space. You can also look for affordable and eco-friendly bedding materials, such as organic cotton sheets!

2. Repaint With Care

A great way to freshen up your room and integrate a new aesthetic is by throwing a fresh coat of paint on your walls. Believe it or not, most paint is not super environmentally healthy. A majority of wall paints contain volatile organic compounds, otherwise known as VOCs. These contribute to global warming and are not healthy to breathe in. There are other paint companies out there who do not use VOCs in their formula with awesome colors. Pick your favorite shade and get to work!

3. Adopt Some Plants

Plants are the latest craze in the design world. They take some serious work and attention, but there are few things more rewarding than learning how to keep your plant baby alive and thriving. You can also throw them into cute pots or baskets as they grow to give your room a boho, eco feel.

4. Shop Recycled

When getting new furniture, such as a bed frame, chairs, chests and more, consider shopping at online or in person stores that can prove that their furniture pieces are made from recycled materials. This is a great way to get unique furniture that also is actively keeping waste out of landfills and the oceans by breathing new life into old materials.

5. Shop Used

Another idea for furniture is to shop used. You can find all different kinds of furniture at your local thrift stores. Some may be in pretty bad disrepair, but that just gives you an opportunity to flex your creative skills!

6. Get Bright

Replace all your old light bulbs with LED or other energy efficient bulbs. This is an easy and cheap fix to save energy!

7. Buy Local Art

Shopping local is always a good eco-friendly option because of just how much carbon is emitted during shipping of items. Try sifting through local stores to find yourself some unique and cool art for your walls. Supporting locals is cool!

8. Upgrade Current Furniture

If you don't want to buy new furniture, simply upgrade your old furniture by repainting it or adding a new design.

9. Get Crafty

If you don't want to spend any money, try making your own artwork and furniture! It's easier than you think.

10. Unplug It

Start using a power cord for multiple items. That way when you need to leave, you can simply  unplug the power cord and not have to worry about unplugging all of the lamps and chargers you have.

Just because you have decided to renovate your bedroom space does not mean you have to buy all new items or go crazy. Investing in quality, eco-friendly materials and refurbishing cool old items will have you feeling the eco love before you know it.
