6 Films About Environmentalism to Watch Tonight

by Carol Evenson | 17-03-2021 14:08

As technology continues to advance, environmental scientists discover more and more each day about humankind¡¯s impact on the planet. The impacts of climate change are more apparent than ever, and many in the entertainment industry have taken it upon themselves to spread the word to a larger audience through their films.

Whether you¡¯re a passionate environmentalist, or simply want to learn more about environmentalism and the effects of climate change, queue up one of these six films for your next movie night to learn more about both why and how to reduce your own carbon footprint to protect the planet we call home.

1. Wall-E

This family-friendly film developed by Disney and Pixar animation studios is set in a distant future where mankind prioritized indulgent overconsumption over environmental concerns. A small trash-collecting robot named Wall-E lives on an abandoned planet earth that is so polluted that the soil has become infertile and the landscape completely littered with garbage.

This film offers a subtle environmental message that will leave every member of your family more mindful of their own trash generation, and maybe even thinning of installing a solar power system in your home.

2. An Inconvenient Truth

Straightforward and unapologetic, this documentary featuring Al Gore was one of the first environmental films to reach mainstream audiences in the country, and is credited for paving the way for subsequent environmentalist documentaries that followed.

Though it¡¯s been largely considered a polarizing film, this documentary presented a series of charts, graphs and other visuals to demonstrate data surrounding climate change to a wide audience - emphasizing our personal responsibility both in perpetuating and reducing humankind¡¯s impact on global warming.

3. Chasing Coral

This award-winning documentary focuses not only on the increasing temperatures of the atmosphere and the earth, but on the rising temperatures of the oceans. In this film, underwater cameras document the alarming disappearance of some of the planet¡¯s most important and complex underwater ecosystems.

Filmmakers, divers and photographers reveal to audiences the diminishing coral reefs that sustain a wide variety of life forms under the ocean, and highlight humankind¡¯s responsibility to intervene to protect the balance of aquatic life before it¡¯s too late.

4. Fern Gully

Another family-friendly film, this cartoon shines a light on humankind¡¯s greed for natural resources and the delicate natural environments that we too often exploit. The messages in this film are clear and digestible, as audiences follow a group of pixies as they witness the destruction and upheaval of some of our planet¡¯s natural resources.

This film delivers its message without any over reprimand, leaving you and your family to reflect on your own contributions to the deterioration of the planet¡¯s rainforests.

5. A Life on Our Planet

David Attenborough has had a decades long career in environmentalism, most recognizable by most audiences for his soothing narration of many nature documentaries. In this latest installment, he details the degeneration of the planet¡¯s biodiversity through incredible visuals that take a look at struggling wildlife around the world.

Both throughout and at the end of the film, audiences are given a call to action to change their everyday behaviors and advocate for widespread climate action, lest humankind destroy the planet¡¯s plants and animals for good.

6. The Day After Tomorrow

This dystopian fiction movie directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Jake Gyllenhal imagines a world where the arctic has abruptly melted, wreaking havoc on the rest of the planet. As a result, the planet experiences extreme temperatures, disruptions in oceanic norms and life as we know it is threatened to the point of utter destruction.

If it¡¯s hard to imagine what you might do in the event of abrupt, extreme climate change, this film gives audiences a good idea of what it would take to navigate and overcome extreme conditions, both for ourselves and the planet.

Whether you are in the mood for an informative documentary or a plot-based work of fiction, choosing one of the aforementioned films for your next movie night can be not only entertaining, but eye-opening as well.
