As a student who will be going into environmental engineering in college, the field has always intrigued me in how it can be directly applicable to addressing environmental issues through the use of technology. While I myself have personally been involved in implementing different policies in my school community and promoting environmental awareness in my school, I have always felt that this was not enough. Although a change to a sustainable lifestyle can benefit the environment, it seemed that it simply was not enough to truly tackle the big problem in front of us. This made me interested in environmental engineering and especially the field of water management. 

The field of water management encompasses diverse fields, which include water sanitation, water disposal, and controlling floods. Water resource engineers make sure that clean water reaches households and are recycled or disposed properly. Engineers specializing in water resource design new equipment and systems aimed to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of water treatment and resource management. The job involves analysis of data and designing water management facilities as well as managing construction of these facilities. It is a profession that requires more than just engineering skills. Economics, finance, and social science skills are necessary to make sure each facility meets government regulations and procures enough loans to finance each project.

These engineers also work to prevent future natural disasters. They assess different infrastructure and their risks under floods or droughts. At the same time as natural disasters become worsened by climate change, water scarcity is becoming a pressing problem in many areas around the world. All these factors have increased the demand for water resource engineers and creates a bright outlook for this field.

Along with the bright outlook for water resource engineers, the most important feature of this job is that these engineers are making a real difference in people's lives. Whether it be providing clean water or protecting them from natural disasters, a profession in water management is a meaningful job in which you can truly contribute to the betterment of our world.
