Wastes and Environment (Thematic Report)

by Lucas Marcus | 24-02-2021 21:17

The natural world is home for solid discarded materials (Wastes) from industrial, agricultural or municipal practices. In my country, the government has put in place mechanisms for disposing such wastes which if not properly controlled might negatively impact the environment.

Tanzania produces over 16.9 tons of solid waste per year generated especially in metropolitan towns and this is due to population increase and physical size of these towns. This calls for proper Management of solid waste which is major concern.

We have several types of wastes including general waste, recyclable waste, hazardous waste (organic, biogas, insect derived protein), hospital waste and industrial waste. All these wastes require special treatment from collection to disposal.

Proper infrastructure and sustainable plan need to be in place in order to manage waste disposal without negatively affecting the environment. Besides, progressive research ought to be done on converting solid waste into usable energy. Since waste is continuously generated converting such waste into usable energy it would supply essentially endless source of energy reducing waste and providing a safe means of waste disposal.
