Eco-Friendly Trends

by Carol Evenson | 18-02-2021 02:47

Every year people make resolutions to eat healthier, exercise more and live a more environmentally conscious life. By year¡¯s end, many of these promises fall by the wayside. This year, however, there are some exciting new earth-friendly trends to help the eco-minded consumer reach their goals.

Eco-Friendly Food

Everybody wants to live a healthier lifestyle and right now plant-based foods are a trending diet choice. Raising livestock has a huge impact on the environment from increasing greenhouse gases to soil and water contamination. Land that could be used to grow healthy sustainable plants is often used to grow feed for cattle. When you buy food for yourself and your family, you must sometimes make a tough choice with regards to cost, taste and esthetic appeal. However, newer farming practices such as regenerative agriculture that seeks to take care of topsoil through various means and the increase in the number of delicious vegetarian food options might make the eco-friendly choice easier to make. Once you get your healthy diet sorted, it¡¯s time to ask the question, ¡°What is Thrive?¡± and focus on feeling vigorous and energetic for your workout goals.

Eco-Friendly Vehicles

If you biked to work every day, you might reach your fitness goals quickly, but unless you work in an ultra-casual environment and never get sweaty, this probably isn¡¯t an ideal solution for you. You may need to continue to work out the old-fashioned way – before or after work like everyone else. What you drive to work may be due for an eco-upgrade, however. Not everyone can afford a Tesla, but there are plenty of hybrid and fully electric cars on the market. These cars are quiet, fuel-efficient and getting more powerful and comfortable all the time as the technology advances.

Eco-Friendly Homes

When you choose your electricity provider, you may have the option of picking a company that provides at least some of its electricity generated by solar or wind power. Renewable energy sources account for just 11% of the market, but that will increase as demand grows. There are many state and federal incentives and rebates for choosing renewable energy. The state of California alone offers over 100 different programs to encourage homeowners and businesses to go green.

Eco-Friendly Fashion

Shoppers are paying attention to the brands they buy and considering their eco-friendly policies before they make their purchases. Up to 38% of consumers are switching brands based on the environmental policies of the parent organization. Tags now let shoppers know if the product was made from recycled or organic materials. The fashion industry is responsible for millions of tons of waste going into landfills every year. They now must walk a fine line between showing consumers that they care for the environment while also encouraging the purchase of ever newer and trendy shoes and clothes. One push-back movement that has gained steam recently is through companies such as ThredUP which sells curated boxes of used clothing at a fraction of the cost of new clothes. It¡¯s thrift store shopping without having to go into a thrift store.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

There is hardly a product now that you can¡¯t find sold in zero or almost zero waste packaging. Shampoo bars do away with plastic bottles. Tiny glass refillable dental floss containers also eliminate plastic waste. The cleaning industry has been revolutionized by condensed cleaning solutions that you mix yourself in reusable glass bottles. It seems that every industry is getting into the act. This is a trend in the right direction as 27 million tons of plastic ends up in landfills every year. Not all plastic can be recycled, and the recycling industry has yet to catch up with the amount of plastic that it receives. The most eco-friendly solution is to avoid using plastic if possible.

If each person made just one pro-environmental change in their life, the world would definitely be a greener place.
