(Thematic Report) Wastes and Environment

by ALOK DHAKAL | 14-02-2021 17:05

Thematic report: February

Warm greetings all eco- warriors. It's been already 6 months that I have been ambassador for Nepal. I would like to thank mentors and eco- generation for all support and guidance till now, and hope to get guidance in coming future as well.

Me and my family members usually use cotton reusable bag if we go on shopping. These bags don¡¯t take up really much space when rolled up, but can save a lot of plastic when you go on medicine shop, small grocery, or shopping market. Moreover, We prefer to go paperless with bills. I generally pay due amount through e- wallet without printing a receipt for that instead keep screenshot in mobile phone. What I like the most is some companies, organisations will even give you a slight discount for paying through e-wallet helping you save a little money and the environment at the same time. This trend of using e- wallet to reduce paper prints are being famous these days in developing country like Nepal.

Taking next, we generally keep waste from kitchen and field into various division one which can be reused and another which can be decayed to produce compost manure. Composting or recycling food and plant waste back into the ecosystem is much easier as it only requires small piece of land, and waterways. Eventually it will help to enrich the soil. Various local organisation in Nepal organises training program to train and teach community members about the recycling techniques. 3R's use is now being famous in Nepal in all communities. Not only governmental organisations, all people are aware of these facts.

Integrated solid waste management policy is made in Nepal from government sector. It is a process of optimizing the waste management system as a whole with application of a variety of suitable technologies.

Integrated solid waste management includes the following:

-Decreasing the amount of waste, -Proper storage of waste at source, -Efficient waste collection, -Street sweeping, -Waste transfer from preliminary collection vehicles to haulage vehicles, -Hazardous waste management, etc.

In order to ensure that all aspects of integrated solid waste management are addressed and the system as a whole function effectively and efficiently, government need a proper strategy as well as sufficient human and financial resources to implement the strategy. It is prime duty of everyone to help government to do work smoothly. Let's be together to save mother earth.

Green Cheers!!
