[Green Living] [October Free Report] Recycling in Montenegro

by Elizaveta Sycheva | 30-10-2023 00:20

As one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe, Montenegro takes great pride in its nature. The beautiful landscapes also play a big part in the country¡¯s economy, attracting tourists and boosting the corresponding economic sector. However, the ecosystems are in danger, as waste piles up and destroys the natural habitats of different flora and fauna species. In recent years, the amount of effort put into protecting the environment from waste has increased, both on the governmental level and through the actions of independent initiatives. One of the issues that is currently being tackled is the lack of awareness around and structural support for recycling.

Currently, Montenegro has access to a wide variety of produce and other goods that come in recyclable packaging and/or are recyclable themselves. However, according to the Monstat Administration of Statistics, only less than 2 percent of municipal waste gets recycled. This is very concerning, as more and more waste is produced in the country each year with its growing economy.

This statistic can be attributed to various causes. For example, the people might not be fully informed about the issue, and therefore not make efforts to improve. A different problem would be the lack of recycling infrastructure, as there are not enough relying centers and separate waste bins in the cities.

However, the situation is slowly turning around, as new projects and initiatives for change arise. For example, recycling is now taught in primary schools as a small part of the curriculum. This helps to raise awareness from a young age, and allows the new generation to be better prepared to lead a sustainable lifestyle. The issue with the lack of infrastructure to support recycling is more difficult to fix, but efforts are still made in that field.

The organization Zero Waste Montenegro, that is concerned with improving the waste management system in the country, is responsible for setting up recycling opportunities, organizing clean-up meetings in polluted areas, such as parts of forests and beaches, and raising awareness around environmentally conscious waste management practices.

I find the actions of the team very inspiring, and I hope that their work continues yielding results, as some of their projects have already proven to be effective. I believe that such initiatives are the drivers of change that we need to see more of in the world.
