[THEMATIC REPORT] WASTE AND ENVIRONMENT

by Meena Pandey | 09-02-2021 20:42

Firstly, we need to be crystal clear on what actually waste is. The things considered as waste by one group of people may not be waste to another group of people. Something that is considered as waste can be used again and again i.e. reuse thereby making it of use although it is considered as waste after its use. Thus, we can say waste to those things which have no longer use and it is unwanted for us. Waste may be solid or liquid. Organic waste undergo decomposition after a certain period of time with an evolvement of foul gas inviting many flies which becomes the breeding place for flies, mosquito and cause the diseases like typhoid, diarrhea and so on. Similarly, inorganic waste such as glass pieces, metallic waste, debris, which are not hazardous or pathogenic to our health but it is responsible for adding waste to the environment.

We can classify waste into different categories such as municipal solid waste, industrial solid waste, agricultural waste and residues, hazardous waste and nuclear waste. Classification of solid waste seems to be tedious but it is of great advantageous. On classification of solid waste, it helps in recycling, proper disposal, stable collection system. Municipal waste comprises waste generated due to activities of municipal and street activities such as dead animals, market wastes etc. Commercial waste originates due to the official activities, restaurant, hotels and so on. Hazardous waste is those waste having a origin of industrial, institutional or consumer origin which is harmful physically, chemically, biologically to the human health and environment. Agricultural origin includes both organic and inorganic wastes which is originated during the production of agricultural products in the farm.

From the local level, after separating the organic waste we used to store the waste from household drudgery in the buckets, plastic bins, metal bins. But after going through the green, there has come the new concept of disposal of waste in different color bins. The yellow bins are meant for the disposal of infectious waste, bandages, gauze, cotton or the object that contains our body fluids. Biomedical wastes should be properly disposed because they are prone to infection. While green dustbin signifies for the disposal of organic waste. We should store the green waste into non-corrosive bins with a lid. Similarly, blue dustbin holds the wastage including glasses, bottles and medicines which has crossed its expiry date. Construction and demolition waste should be properly disposed as they do not undergo decomposition within century or even more than that.

Waste management refers to all those series of activities done for reducing the waste from its origin to its final disposal. It comprises collection, transport, treatment along with its disposal including monitoring and evaluation. The new concept of solid waste management encompasses all those activities that refers reduce, reuse and recycle over the waste disposal. Prevention, minimization, reuse, recycling, and disposal is preferred hierarchically for the solid waste management.  In the todays world where the world is combating against the effect of greenhouse effect and global warming, it is of utmost necessary to manage the waste either to reduce the foul smell or control spread of various contagious diseases due to pollution. When the solid waste is in such a quantity that its management is very difficult, we store the waste in the place far away from residential order.
