 World Wetland Day

World Wetlands Day (WWD) is an environment related celebration celebrated all over the world in every 2nd of Feburary with the aim to raise awareness on global level about the significance of wetlands for people and the planet. In general words, Wetlands are fragile and most sensitive ecosystems that support unique habitats for plants and animals, and providing livelihoods to millions of people across the world. Wetlands can be found wherever water bodies meet the land. Wetlands are amazing in storing and capturing carbon.

WWD is also honours the signing of 1971 Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in Iranian City of Ramsar.

The theme of WWD 2021 is ¡®Wetlands and water¡¯. It aims to highlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages collaborative action to restore them and prevent their loss. The theme in 2020 was ¡®Wetlands and Biodiversity¡¯. Due to modern enhancement we are destroying the normal ecosystem, we are facing fresh water crisis in some parts of world which have threaten all people and our planet.

Significance of Wetlands:

-          Wetlands help in social and economic development thus sustaining humanity and nature.

-          Storage of clean water: They hold and provide freshwater by naturally filtering pollutants leaving water that we can drink.

-          Keep us fed: Aquaculture is rapid growing food production sector.

-          Assistance in economy: More than 1 billion people depend on wetlands for income.

-          Provide nature a home: Around 40% of the world¡¯s species live and breed in wetlands.

-          Wetlands keep us safe: They provide protection from floods and storms

-          Wetlands help regulate the climate

What should we do now to have enough water for us and nature?

Below are some of points concerning it:

a.        Restoring of wetlands and stopping destroying of wetlands.

b.       Remove pollution and clean fresh water sources.

c.        If possible, do not dam rivers.

d.       Wise use of wetlands.

e.        Have wetlands and water in development plan and policies.

That¡¯s end of the free report. I would like to know if the reader knew about this day previous or have taken part in celebration of this day. Thank you.
