5 Tips For Doing Yoga At Home

by Jenn Lee | 28-01-2021 14:57

You might be new to yoga or someone who's spent many years taking studio classes. Whatever your situation, the prospect of starting a practice at home can seem challenging. There's not a 3D instructor who's there to encourage you close up, there's no set class time that forces you off the couch and out of your house — not to mention all of the temptations and distractions at home. If you focus on a few key guidelines, however, the shift to at-home yoga can be easy and even fun. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Prioritize

It yoga isn't an established part of your daily routine, getting started can be the hardest part. Habits — whether they're growth-promoting or inertia-creating — are hard to break, and humans tend to repeat habits over and over. That's good to know up front, because you can then focus on prioritizing your new habit. Be consistent. Make it part of your schedule just as you would a dinner out, a work meeting, or an outside appointment. Make it non-negotiable. Pick a time that's sensible and realistic. Then, put it on your calendar, and include a reminder if you need it. Be prepared, so there's no fuss required when you get started. Have your yoga clothes already on, or put them out beforehand. Have your mat readily available. If you're planning to go online, have ready broadband access available by searching for a multifamily utility company or another option.

2. Explore Your Options

If you're an experienced yogi who can do free flows on your own and make it up as you go, you're fortunate. If you're like most people and need some motivation, there's a lot of help online. Want to stay connected with a specific yoga studio? No problem! Most good-sized yoga businesses have an online component. Since many of these types of classes are live, they provide a personal touch. There are also online-focused yoga communities that provide hundreds of high-production, high-level videos and live instruction, too.

Looking for lower-priced options? YouTube has hundreds of channels and instructors that provide guidance for free. Also, the number of yoga apps is growing. There's bound to be a choice that fits your style, fitness level, and financial situation.

3. Set The Mood

Setting the mood is a vital part of any movement practice, and it's especially important at home for yoga. Roomates, family members, pets, and even neighborhood sounds can all be a distraction. If you can, choose a room with a door so you can practice undisturbed. Lighting a candle or diffusing some essential oils can make all of the difference in how a room feels. The most important thing is that you feel relaxed and calm. Your clothes should be comfortable — thankfully, you don't have to be concerned about what they look like!

4. Stay With It

Most yoga practices end with Savasana pose, which cultivates deep relaxation and helps to integrate all of the benefits you've received. In live studio classes, most teachers emphasize staying until the very end. Do the same when you're at home! It's an area that's easy to skimp — but don't. It's one of the most nourishing aspects of a yoga practice. Don't let your mind pull you into the day's activities prematurely. Allow yourself to close your eyes, relax, and breathe.

5. Stay On Track

In the process of starting a new habit or practice, it's tempting to distract or criticize yourself. Know that this is normal, and the only way to get past this stage is to keep focusing on your breathing, and focus on the new patterns and behaviors you're creating. Center yourself in the present moment. If necessary, keep a notebook nearby to jot down "have-to-do" tasks that pop into your head. Then return to your practice.

Starting an at-home yoga practice can be a rewarding journey, if you're intentional about it. Try these tips to do it successfully.
