POLLUTION CONTROL

We met with an expert consultant and environmentalist .He has previously worked with UN-HABITAT and spearheaded the KISWAMP project. He briefed us on Pollution control activities as per the project guidelines:
The KUP plan includes recovery of lakefront land spaces, to develop them into scenic public spaces, free of liquid and solid waste pollution that have tarnished the aesthetic of the riparian zones. Settlement and agricultural activities in the water catchment
areas shall be prohibited; and all water courses and wetlands should be identified, delineated and gazette in line with recommendations of International Conventions as a mitigation against Injurious pollution
Institute the polluter pays principle, and provide incentives to manufacturing concerns in order to control pollution and soil acidification
Ensure that environmental impact assessments and audits are carried out on all developments that have a propensity to pollute and implement appropriate remedial measures
Prohibit discharge of untreated solid and liquid waste into rivers and lakes by individuals and local authorities by providing waste dumping sites, sewerage treatment and incineration facilities
Implementation of land quality conservation principles to enhance environmental protection from solid waste pollution
Land Policy should be understood in the context of other sectors such as water, energy, human settlement, industry, tourism, wildlife, forestry and fisheries. Thus effective land management requires coordination and cooperation among these sectors.
Enforcing officers are strict on compliance to the ban on plastic bags to mitigate solid waste pollution arising from such.
County clearance for industries includes agreement to comply with regulations that provide for the prevention, control and abatement of air pollution to ensure clean and
healthy ambient air.
The City requires industries and public speaking halls e.g. churches and mosques to comply with legal notice no. 61- the environmental management and coordination (noise and excessive vibration pollution) (control) regulations
