The one health concept:

One health focusses on fact that population health relay on the interaction between animal and human diseases in the biological and social environment. “One Health” concept was introduced at the beginning of the 2000s. Humans beings interact with animals with a greater frequency all over the world. This interaction gives an opportunity for a disease to spread and emerge which create heavy impact on human as well as animal. The primary area of one health includes food safety, zoonoses, anitibiotic resistance and many more.

Why the concept of one health is required?

As many of the microorganism that infect animals and human beings share a common eco- system they live in, so concept of one health is required. For the elimination of the problem, it cannot be eradicated by effort from only one sector. From past three decades the majority of emerging zoonotic infectious disease originate in animals, especially wildlife. So there requires the collaborative approach. And other example: drug resistant bacteria can be transmitted between animals and humans through the direct contact through contaminated food or any other means so well coordinated approach in human and animal is required.  

Who makes the One Health approach work?

To make one health approach work professionals with wide range of expertise in field such as animal health, plant health, public health and the environment should come collaboratively. Organisations like World health organisation(WHO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) work closely to promote multi- sectoral responses to food safety hazards, zoonoses and many other public health threats that effect on human- animal- ecosystem.
