[October Thematic Report] Eco-Friendly Products

by Jae Hee Lee | 26-10-2023 23:21

Like other developing countries, the Philippines has faced numerous environmental issues related to non-eco friendly items, primarily from the widespread use of plastics. Often these products result in alarming environmental consequences, which underscores the urgent need to switch to eco-friendly alternatives.

According to the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), the Philippines is one of the world's top plastic polluters, impacting the health of its citizens and the environment of the country. Therefore, adoption of eco-friendly products is crucial for reducing the harmful effects of non-eco-friendly items.

List of Some Eco-Friendly Products:

Reusable Water Bottles: By switching to reusable water bottles, Filipinos can reduce the millions of plastic bottles that end up in landfills and oceans.

Bamboo Toothbrushes: ¡°Bamboo can reach full maturity just within a single growing season¡± (Reel Paper.) Bamboo toothbrushes are biodegradable and can act as  a sustainable alternative to plastic toothbrushes.

Electric Tricycles: Electric tricycles are eco-friendly modes of transportation that can reduce air pollution and the Philippine¡¯s reliance on fossil fuels. People can easily access tricycles by locating them in parks or along sidewalks, just like in other nations like Japan and South Korea.

Policies and Campaigns

To further promote the spread of eco-friendly products in the Philippines, several policies/campaigns can be implemented:

Preventing Usage of Plastic Bags: Charging a small fee for plastic bags in retail establishments, as seen in places like Korea, is an effective strategy to reduce use of plastic bags while also promoting the adoption of reusable bags.

Waste Separation: Promoting waste separation initiatives, similar to those in Korea and Japan, can ensure the proper disposal and recycling of materials like plastic, vinyl, and other waste items.

By adopting eco-friendly products and supporting related policies and campaigns, the Philippines can develop further  towards a more sustainable and environmentally sustainable nation!
