by Bal krishna Pandey | 08-12-2020 23:24

Mount Everest is a symbol of Nepal and Nepali identity in the world. Nepal and Everest have become synonymous. Moreover, climbing Mt. Everest is becoming the lifeline of Nepal's tourism. On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Mt. Everest for the first time in history at an altitude of 8,848 meters. There have been instances of climbing Mt. Everest at the youngest age, the youngest and most often, in the shortest time, even without oxygen.

The peak, which was previously considered 8,848 meters high, is the highest point on earth and has now announced a new official measurement of mountains height on eighth of December 2020:  8,848.86 meters, or 29,031.69 feet. This is an official announcement by Nepal and China, the two countries that share a border on Mount Everest

In 1954, the 'Survey of India' measured the height of Mount Everest. Since then, various organizations have measured the height of Mount Everest at different times, but the height measured by the 'Survey of India' was still considered official. Similarly, in 1999, The United States and in 2005, China measured the height of Mount Everest. There was different results on their measurements.

After the international discussion started saying that the height of Everest may have changed due to the earthquake of 2015 AD, Nepal had announced to measure the height of Everest with its own resources. The Everest Measurement Team measured Everest using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology. This technology is considered to be the most advanced technology. Not only sophisticated technology but also traditional technology was used to measure the height.

Long before Nepal named the peak Mount Everest (SAGARMATHA), the Tibetans named it CHOH-moh-LUHNG-m. SAGARMATHA in Nepali means GODDESS OF THE SKY.
