Effects of Christmas on the Environment

Effects could simply be good or bad. I would however be looking at the bad (negative) effects the festivity Christmas has on the environment. I chose to write about this specific festivity because I am a Christian and upon reflection and thought, I thought it would be right to look at the negative impact the celebration has on the environment rather than looking at the benefits.

Christmas is a festivity that is celebrated all around the world. It is mostly celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. It comes with celebrations and a whole lot of activities such as exchange of gifts and giving away of gifts. Most of this gifts and other items mostly used for the celebration are made from plastics and after the celebration they may be improperly disposed. This means there is the tendency of increase in pollution during and after the celebration.

What is Christmas without the special Christmas lightening? I have seen situations where individuals turn on their main lights and add the special Christmas light to it. In such a scenario it would be noticed more power would be consumed and hence there would be pressure on the power grid. More light means more heat and once heat is increase it indirectly or directly affects global warming in a negative way.

Down here in Africa and Ghana to be precise, I personally think we use too much time celebrating the said festivity where some people celebrate the Christmas till the end of January the following year. Time is therefore not utilized well during this time. Unutilized time means there would be retardation in the development of the country and hence the economy would still be shrinking. A little time for the celebration is key but too much of everything is bad.

So Christmas could be a good thing but inversely it does affects us human beings and the whole environment as a whole.
