Eco-friendly mobility (Thematic report)

by Malika Rustamova | 20-11-2020 16:32

As we all know, traditional transport causes problems that harmfully impact the environment, natural resources, and people's quality of life. According to statistics, around 1/4 of global CO2 emissions come from transportation. That's why is important to find an alternative (eco-mobility or sustainable transport) that encourages and promotes the use of efficient and eco-friendly transport. However, still, it is one of the greatest challenges facing cities today.

One of the types of ecological transport is a bicycle. In Uzbekistan during the lockdown, the usage of bicycles significantly increased as the use of private cars and other means of vehicles were prohibited. I suppose it is a judicious solution because bicycling gets people out of the house into the fresh air. It is safe since we are not in close contact with other individuals. People avoid the risk of coronavirus on mass transit and can use the bike for commuting and around-town errands. In order to continue this trend in different cities of Uzbekistan began to build bike paths and were held various marathons.

Moreover, on October 30, the President of Uzbekistan signed a decree "Measures for the widespread introduction of a healthy lifestyle and the further development of the mass sport." According to it, citizens will be able to earn 3,000 sums (0.29$) per day for walking 10 thousand o more steps, and those who have passed the largest number of steps - up to 1 million sums (95$) per month. By implementing such a policy, authorities want to increase people's motivation to walk more.

Should be mentioned that nowadays one electric bus runs around the capital city and the Uzbek car factory "SamAuto" is going to start its own production of electric buses by 2022. Regarding the Concept of Environmental Protection until 2030, at least 50% of public transport in Uzbekistan should switch to alternative types of fuel.

Today there are several different projects to start using eco-friendly mobility, but sustainable urban mobility requires a mind shift and preparedness for difficulties.
