Introduction

Spiked ginger lily is a herbal medicinal plant native to China, the Himalayas, Myanmar, Thailand and Ethiopia. The local name of spiked ginger lily is Sandharlika/kapurkachari. The scientific name of spiked ginger lily is Hedychium spicatum. It belongs to zingiberaceae family. Rhizome decoction are the major part used for medicines. It is used mainly in the treatment cough and cold. Basically, rhizome decoction or liquid is very fruitful for medical purpose.

In Ayurveda, this species is described as a plant with pungent, light, bitter, strong, heating properties. It is one of the integral elements in Chinese Traditional medicine. The rhizome of this plant is also chewed by people to clean their mouth and freshens their breath. The fruit of this species is cooked and eaten with lentils in most of the cases. It is taken as savoury dishes. The rhizome crushed has very pleasant or aromatic fragnant. The Vermillion or abir that is used to prepare Tika that is a colored powder having religious importance is also prepared from it's fragnant colored powder.

The leaves of this plant is used for making mats for the home, combined with wheat straw to enhance durability of the product. The aromatic dried root of this plant is often used as incense in country like Ethiopia. The essential oil has a fragnancr somewhat like hyacinths with a long lasting scent. This plant is small, hardy perennial with green leaves and large orange and white flowers. Thus, this plant has diverse significance.
