International snow leopard day 2020

In every year October 23 is celebrated as a international leopard day to commemorate the anniversary of Bishekh Declaration. At the first global snow leopard forum and ecosystem protection forum held in October 2013 where all 12 snow leopard range countries participated the Bishekh Declaration.  This day is celebrated to provide a awareness about its ecological importance.

Snow leopard(Panthera uncia ) is large cat and found in himalayan region and mountains of central Asia of 12 countries.  In Nepal snow leopard are mainly distributed in district of Mustang , Muga, Dolpa, Humla

Some facts relating to snow leopard are mentioned below.

Snow leopard body have light grey colour with black spot on the head and neck.

They live at altitude of 3000 to 4500 meter and snowy land.

Due to wide and fur covered feet they can tolerate cold weather and snow.

They are also called as ghost of mountain because they are rarely seen.

Snow leopard can travel around 25 mile in a single night.

Snow leopard can jump upto 9 meters .

They cannot roar akin to cat.

They normally live for 15 to 18 years in wild and reach their sexual maturity at age of two years .

IUCN has listed as snow leopard as  vulnerable species in IUCN red list of threatened species. Habitat loss, poaching, human snow leopard conflict are major causes of extinction of snow leopard.  According to recent journal published in Journal of ecology and evolution shows that snow leopard are eating livestock despite the availability of wild prey in their habitat. This research was conducted at shey phoksundo region of Nepal.Human snow leopard conflict was one of the  major reason of snow leopard extinction in Nepal. Herder keep their livestock in pasture land for grazing. During this time Snow leopard attack the domestic animals which is major reason of livestock depredation
People will kill snow leopard to protect their livestock and minimize economic loss. Nepal government,  different NGO and INGO are hecticly involving with different research and campign to protect vulnerable snow leopard.
