[Monthly report][Environmental movie]-Demain(Tomorrow)

by DONGMO FEUGAP Ruth Merveillle Blanche | 17-10-2020 18:31

Demain(Tomorrow) is a French documentary film directed by Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent , released in 2015 .  The film has the particularity of not giving into catastrophism but its essence is to serve as a road movie which reveals, in five thematic sections , examples of concrete responses to environmental and social problems at the start of the 21st century.

Adopting an optimistic point of view, it identifies initiatives in ten countries(:Mainland France and Reunion , Finland , Denmark , Belgium , South India , Great Britain , United States , Switzerland , Sweden and Iceland ) facing these challenges whether in agriculture, energy, economy, education or governance. Tomorrow is not just a Film; it is the beginning of a movement seeking to encourage local communities around the world to change the way they live for the sake of our planet. The authors were able to enumerate some facts about these countries as listed below:

In Detroit, vegetables are grown up locally, reducing the amount of oil, as transport facilities are no longer involved. In Normandy , Perrine and Charles Hervé-Gruyer, organic farmers , practice a kind of permaculture , which they call ecoculture  . They produce a diversity of about a thousand  varieties on one hectare by loading their soil with humus, without using oil .They equally practice agroecology which  turns out to be more profitable than monoculture , which impoverishes the land and remains dependent on oil, fertilizers and pesticides. The people of Todmorden in England are trying to achieve the self-sufficiency food by sowing vegetables and plant fruit trees in the streets, so that everyone can help themselves.

With regards to the energy sector, the film shows buildings with roofs covered with solar panels, rows of wind turbines, the reuse of waste as compost (in San Francisco ) or to produce electricity (in Copenhagen ). In South India , the model village of Kuthambakkam, built with local ecological materials, also almost ensures its energy autonomy thanks to renewable energies. Public buildings in Copenhagen have already reduced their energy consumption by 45%. The city benefits from model town planning . The inhabitants live within 300 meters of a green space , and they are 50% to get around by bicycle . The goal is to stop emitting CO2 by 2025.

At the economical level, facts shows how The complementary currency system is proving its worth in Switzerland and The city of San Francisco practices the circular economy by recycling 80% of its waste and aiming for "  zero waste  ".

This documentary encourages everyone to start small and grow big and write a story for the new generation to come. Equally practice the 5R (Repair, Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle, Reduce) of circular economy to reduce the maximum possible waste and preserve our natural resources.
