[Free Report] Educational Efforts led by India to Face Environmental Concerns

by Khushi Chindaliya | 11-10-2020 14:38

The term ¡®climate change¡¯ was first identified in 1896 by the Swedish scientist and Nobel Prize awardee Svante Arrhenius and the economic modelling (carbon pricing) as a means to face this challenge was established by an American economist and Nobel Prize Awardee Dr. William Nordhaus in 1975 and 1977. Education can, thus, be observed as an essential tool for promoting scientific research and encouraging innovations to face environmental challenges. It can help in promoting scientific discussions and dialogues on public domains. By helping us in understanding environmental concerns, raising right awareness and addressing issues to create a sustainable and environmentally healthy world, education can play a critical role in influencing the changes required to face environmental concerns.

The Supreme Court of India also introduced Environmental Education (EE) as a regular course in the formal education system in an effort to raise awareness on environmental issues. The primary aim of the directive is to use local materials, training modules and conduct practical activities to create a generation of environmentally conscious citizens as well as create local role models who from a young age can voice their concerns in their communities and develop solutions to face environmental challenges.

In addition, right education can direct in setting a chain of green innovations and establishment of green institutions. For example, with the help of their education a group of young individuals in the capital city of Delhi have created a device to convert vehicular pollution to ink; two young individuals in Surat are working on the concept of ¡®change what you wear to face climate change¡¯ where they use agricultural waste to create better quality clothes than Lenin which can protect our skin from ultraviolet radiations; another couple in the city of Chennai have established a startup where plastic waste is recycled into energy efficient fuel. Thus,  in my view, education has a crucial role in creating conscious citizens, correct awareness and facilitating green innovations. Hence, it is crucial for the entire educational community to come together and create awareness on environmental concerns through various platforms such as schools, colleges, libraries, televisions, social media, newspapers and magazines.
