(Monthly Event) Honey Bee

by Kushal Naharki | 11-10-2020 02:21

Insects cover almost 80% population of the world¡¯s total species. Being a student of agriculture, I see insects as both good and bad but as an environmentalist I look to alternatives methods to pesticides with integrated pest management approach. Using pesticides has caused a huge damage to the beneficial insects. The study warns that more than 40% of insect species could become extinct in the next few decades.

Honey Bee is a popular social insect. They are also cultivated commercially. They provide us honey, wax and pollen. Honey Bees are an important part of our environment as they play an important role in the pollination. It is estimated honeybees are responsible for pollinating agricultural crops that make up one-third of our diet.

May 20 is celebrated as world beeday. Bees are vital for the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity in nature. They provide one of the most recognisable ecosystem services, i.e. pollination, which is what makes food production possible. By doing so, they protect and maintain ecosystems as well as animal and plant species, and contribute to genetic and biotic diversity.

Every morning I see honey bee humming and dancing around, I feel very happy and inspired. Albert Einstein has said, ¡°If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live¡±. They are also a source of team work. Dancing bees make us feel happy and a spoon of honey produced by the honey bee keeps us healthy as well.
