Nobel Peace Prize 2020 (Free Report )

by Sagar Koirala | 09-10-2020 22:10

Just like every year, Nobel Committe awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2020 to World Food Program. World Food Program is one of the program of United Nations established in 1961 to tackle the problem of hunger and food insecurity. Since then, WFP has been working in many places of the world mostly in underdeveloped and least developed countries to ensure that every individual is provided with basic food calorie for the survival.

The First development program of WFP was started in 1963 in Sudan and today it is working in 80 countries, mostly of Africa and Asia. In 1965, WFP is enshrined as a fully-fledged UN programme. WFP operates centrally from Rome, Italy.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to World Food Program for their remarkable efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity across the globe. There are many reasons where there has been conflict since a long time. People in such reasons were not only deprived of basic facilities but had difficulty in getting basic food for living. From air-dropping food in South Sudan to creating an emergency delivery service to keep aid flowing despite coronavirus travel restrictions, the Rome-based organization has long specialized in getting assistance to some of the world¡¯s most dangerous and precarious places. It provided assistance to almost 100 million people in 88 countries last year.

The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Mr. Berit Reiss-Andersen said , ¡°With this year¡¯s award, the (committee) wishes to turn the eyes of the world to the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger.¡± The Nobel Committee said that the problem of hunger has again become more acute in recent years, not least because of the coronavirus pandemic that has added to the hardship already faced by millions of people around the world.

I personally think that WFP deserved to win the award as they played pivotial role in tackling hunger in many parts of the world. COVID-19 pandemic has made many people without proper food and amidst such situation, WFP is playing major role in maintaining food security. The prize money 1.1million $ will also be fully utilized for tackling hunger.
