by Bal krishna Pandey | 02-10-2020 22:53

Monthly event for September

Hello, eco generation family,

I have been growing up in a society where zero waste lifestyle have been followed since time immemorial and my report covers some of the practices I have adopted.

I strictly follow the 5R of waste management.

  1. Refuse: I say no to what I do not need. I say no to plastic bags when I buy goods. I have my eco generation bags to use. There is always a steel water bottle in my bag so that I can refuse plastic bottles. I say no to plastic toys, plastic straw and playing materials to the children. I think before accepting any clutter in my home like junk mails, unnecessary booklets, leaflets and any other junk that is most likely go to the trash. I don¡¯t buy plastic items if there is an alternative. Always I keep in mind why bring home extra plastics?
  2. Reduce: I always think about what I use and buy and seek some ideas to reduce the necessities in my daily routine. In my home, we have many common things to share so that we can reduce the environmental and economic burden. We use leftover food as animal and poultry feed to reduce food waste. Biogas is used instead of LPG at my home. We grow our food to reduce the buying cost and other trash from the supermarket like plastic wraps.
  3. Reuse: My sister likes to make gift items from old plastics, used pens and bangles. I always repair my old clothes when possible. Wrapping papers are also saved for its next use. We have a habit of reusing kitchen water on vegetables and plants. I have planted some flowers and shrubs on plastic bottles and drums. One interesting thing I have done during COVID 19 pandemic is the reuse of polythene as gloves that needs just a small effort.
  4. Recycle: I have followed some YouTube channels that motivates to recycle the trash. I have recycled kitchen waste and my old clothes.
  5. Rethink: I always think more than twice before I try to do something. During COVID 19 lockdown I have read many books and most are borrowed from my friends and pdf versions. In my travel plans, I never forget to enlist to carry my care products.

In Addition,

  • I have replaced plastic pens with classic fountain pens.
  • I use the side pocket of my bag as a dust bin when I travel to take everything back that I bring in.
  • Turning off or unplug of electricity items if not necessary is always what I am used to.
  • Some organizations encourage the donation of clothes in my locality and I took part in their campaigns.
  • I always encourage people to plant trees as much as possible. I have planted 7 fruit trees and many flowers in my backyard.
  • We use leaf plates on many occasion. Plates and spoon made up of plastic are banned in my home.

I have launched a video to prevent food waste on the occasion of World Food Day 2019. You can visit the link:
