[Free report] Human Python Conflict in Chitwan, Nepal

by Sachin Regmi | 29-09-2020 22:16

Pythons are in danger from Human

I live near Chitwan national park. This park is home to wide diversity of animals. Python is one of the protected species there. In Nepal, the Python spp. is the only protected snake species under National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973 with provisions of fine and or imprisonment to offenders. Chitwan national park is a biodiversity hotspot for Burmese python (Python bivittatus) Unofficial studies around Chitwan National Park buffer zone (CNPBZ) show increasing impact of python-human conflict which is becoming a serious threat on conservation of this endangered species. However little to no work is being done to address this conflict.

Preliminary study has been done on the area primarily focused to understand the perception of local community towards python conservation with respect to Burmese python (Python bivittatus).

These study revels shocking results, locals have negative prospection towards pythons. Chitwan is area for poultry farming and also buffer zone for Chitwan national park. These pythons enter these sheds and eat their chickens. In attempt to drive them away, locals hurt these species. We visited the sites and came to a few conclusions:

1.       Pythons are non-venomous snake. They can¡¯t kill animals or humans with bite but they catch their prey and slowly kill them by blocking their breath.

2.      Recent success in python conservation has caused lack of space inside the park. Lack of food also has driven them towards human villages.

3.      Large number of human python encounter, has ended a python killed or hurt although law do not permit so.

Way Foreword:

What can be done to end this conflict? The major work should be done to aware people that pythons are not evil or our danger. They should be saved as they are in danger. While we encounter them, we should call a snake rescuer.
