Why do dogs die after biting with rabies?
How¡¯s rabies treated?

If an animal was rabid and infectious at the time of biting, it would die from the disease within 10 days. Animals can only transmit rabies virus after it has reached the brain and started to spread outwards via nerves – it gets into saliva by working its way down nerves from the brain to the salivary glands.

1. Once a rabies infection is established, there's no effective treatment. Though a small number of people have survived rabies, the disease is usually fatal.
2. For that reason, if you think you've been exposed to rabies, you must get a series of shots to prevent the infection from taking hold.
3. Rabies shots include:
* A fast-acting shot (rabies immune globulin) to prevent the virus from infecting you. Part of this injection is given near the area where the animal bit you if possible, as soon as possible after the bite.
* A series of rabies vaccines to help your body learn to identify and fight the rabies virus. Rabies vaccines are given as injections in your arm. You receive four injections over 14 days

4. If a person has been bitten by an animal, especially if it was an unknown dog or wild animal:
* Wash the bite area well with soap and water and cover the bite with a clean bandage.
* Call your doctor right away and go to the nearest emergency department. Anyone with a possible rabies infection must be treated in a hospital.
* Call local animal-control authorities to help find the animal. It may need to be caught and watched for signs of rabies.
* If you know the owner of the animal that bit your child, get all the information you can, including its vaccination status and the owner's name and address. Notify your local health department, especially if the animal wasn't vaccinated.
Also call your doctor if:
* A person was exposed to an animal that might have rabies, but is too young to describe the contact with the animal.
* A person was exposed to bats, even if there is no bite.
* A person plan to travel abroad and may come into contact with wild animals. This is even more important if you're going to an area with limited access to health care.
