Climate change in Mexico

by Adan Ojeda Villa | 20-09-2020 13:45

Climate change is one of the main environmental problems that currently exist on the planet, and this goes hand in hand with the loss of biodiversity, this is an issue that is important to address and to which an immediate solution must be given. For many years, thousands of people have contributed to curbing climate change with multiple international agreements and actions, but it has not been enough until now, there is still much to do. The main factors that cause climate change are purely anthropocentric activities, such as the accelerated growth of the world population, the technologies used for industrial development and an incredible demand for energy and resources to satisfy humanity. The GHG greenhouse effect emissions produced over time have grown rapidly, in such a way that the main components of this gas have risen from 1750 to 2016 as follows: Methane 163%, Carbon dioxide 43% and Nitrous oxide 17%, these are really alarming figures (Spinrad, nd).

In Mexico there is a great variety of climates, this is due to its latitudinal location, the large mountain ranges that cross the country and the seas that surround it, this causes it to be a region with a large number of ecosystems (Peel et al., 2007), which have been affected by the effects of climate change. One of the unfavorable consequences that is taking place in the center and north of the country due to global warming derived from climate change, is the reduction of cold air during winter. This has affected the deciduous fruit trees that need cold to be able to change their leaves to flower in the spring and continue with their reproductive and vegetative cycle, it is estimated that the population of these species by 2070 will decrease considerably (Medina-García et al. , 2019), taking into account that they are part of a trophic chain and that Mexican families also depend on their fruits, their decrease would have a direct negative impact and an imbalance. This is just one of the many effects of climate change that are seen every day in my country, really alarming scenarios are expected such as droughts in the north of the country and floods in the south, this due to geographical areas.

Mexico is a developing country, which is why the pollution of cities has contributed to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, which is reflected in the ecosystems that are being lost and not only here, but throughout the world. world. Also, let's take into account the large number of endemic species that are at risk of disappearing. All these factors together in future projections tell us that climate change must stop, because the consequences can be enormous and irreversible.

We still have time to act and be able to take actions to save our planet and all the wonders that exist in it, it is the task of each and every one of us. There are many ways to act to stop climate change, from small actions such as: having a correct management of solid waste and a responsible consumption culture, to the production of sustainable energy and livestock, an industry committed to the environment where use technologies that are friendly to the planet and that reduce carbon emissions and reduce the use of hydrocarbons. It is also important that industry, government, and society adhere to international treaties to address climate change, because it is everyone's responsibility. Environmental education is essential in this matter, through the dissemination of information about what climate change is, its consequences and possible actions to stop it, and by trying to reach all corners of the world, awareness can be raised in society so that in this way everyone can contribute.

I am happy to know the number of people who are actively participating with small and large actions and that we are more and more, but at the same time concerned that the place where we live is constantly suffering over time, but I know that yes we all come together and continue taking actions in favor of the environment, we can achieve it!
