Ecosystem changes due to climate change

by Malika Rustamova | 17-09-2020 02:43

Climate change amplifies extreme weather events such as heatwaves and extreme rainfalls. However, it doesn¡¯t affect only global temperatures. Climate change impacts on the living world, including people, through changes in ecosystems, biodiversity, and ecosystem services.

Climate change and human modifications often increase the vulnerability of ecosystems and landscapes to damage from extreme events while at the same time reducing their natural capacity to modulate the impacts of such events. Salt marshes, reefs, mangrove forests, and barrier islands provide an ecosystem service of defending coastal ecosystems and infrastructure against storm surges. Losses of these natural features – from coastal development, erosion, and sea-level rise – render coastal ecosystems and infrastructure more vulnerable to catastrophic damage during or after extreme events.
Living in 2020, human beings can observe severe weather conditions, for instance, according to WMO (World Meteorological Organization) the northern hemisphere experienced its warmest August ever. Moreover, this year the UN (United Nations) recorded 41,599 fires, and 36, 383 of them were caused by human activity. Of course, most of them had detrimental effects on animals, vegetation, and people.

Already nowadays landscapes and seascapes are changing rapidly, so within few years species, including many iconic species, may disappear from regions where they have been prevalent or become extinct, altering some regions so much that their mix of plant and animal life will become almost unrecognizable. Because many species may not be able to keep pace with climate change. From polar bears in the Arctic to marine turtles off the coast of Africa, our planet's diversity of life is at risk from changing climate.
Furthermore, the timing of critical biological events, such as the beginning of the seasons is also changing. For example, nowadays there is almost no winter in Uzbekistan, although several decades ago here were a lot of snowy days. And in summer it is unbearably hot.

Here are only a small part of the consequunces of climate change to ecosystem, besides, it is not known what will happen in the future. I think, climate change being a global problem, can be approached by joint efforts.
