FROG towards EXTINCTION Frogs are one of the oldest vertebrates on this planet. There are reportedly 7,400 species of frogs found in the world and Nepal is home to 12 of them. Among them, four species of frogs found in Nepal are vulnerable to extinction. Croaking of frogs was a common scene during the rainy reason, but that has become rare since the past few years, says the local of different locality. Furthermore, smuggling of the rare species of frogs for various purposes has also been increased. Locals are enticed to catch frogs for a mere two rupees per frog leading to their extinction, says local social worker. It is also due to lack of proper legal measures to protect the vulnerable amphibians and the ignorance on part of the concerned authorities, Public added. Not only that due to the increase in use of dissection of frog in the name of study are also increasing the way towards the end of frog species from the Nature which is directly leading toward the misbalance of ecosystem. Million of frogs are killed for dissection in biology lab. Every year in Nepal, science students cut open 50,000 to 100,000 frogs in Grade XI to study the anatomy of vertebrates. In Nepal, four major species, namely the tiger frog which is listed in Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), Nepal cricket frog, Tarai cricket frog and skittering frog are highly exploited for dissection. Agriculture Development Office, Institution, Conservation Organization as well as Each Human beings has to urged to contribute from their respective sides to conserve the frogs.
