Monthly Report - Changes in Ecosystem due to Climate Change in Nepal

by Sagar Koirala | 14-09-2020 19:46

Nepal is a country of hills and mountains. Around 76 % land is full of mountains, hills and steepy slopes . The mountains are highly vulnerable to the climate change. According to data by ICIMOD, it is clearly evident that snow and glaciers are melting at an alarming rate in past few years. Due to fragile ecosystem, Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate change. Despite contributing nominal to global greenhouse emission, we are facing high negative effect compared to many polluting countries.

Nepal is one of the richest country in terms of water resources. We have abundant rivers, lake, springs, streams, ponds, glaciers and many other sources of water resources. We are highly dependent upon rainfall and other water sources. Due to increasing temperate and climate change, rainfall pattern has gradually changed as compared to past years. Usually Monsoon arrives from Bay of Bengal and since last decade there is alteration in rainfall pattern. Even this year, we saw intense and destructive rainfall even before the onset of Monsoon. The rainfall took a toll of over 1000 people in the form of flood, landslide and soil erosion in different parts of Nepal in 2020. Not only rainfall pattern, the groundwater level has also decreased in recent years according to study by few geologist of Nepal in 2019. Many places in lower hills are witnessing water shortage due to excessive use of resources, population growth, deforestation and excessive extraction of concrete, sand and gravel . The water level in various rivers have also increased in many rivers of Nepal. It will bring several repercussions in upcoming days.

We are also witnessing high temperature growth rate in recent years . The mean average temperature has increased by around 0.5 degree celsius in last 20 years. If the temperature keeps on increasing like this, we might no see habitable temperature after 100 years. The rapid melting of snow in snow caps of mountain might mountains without snow by 2055 AD.

Climate Change is real. We must take necessary steps to fight climate change. If we do not act reponsibly, our future generation might not be able to enjoy this beautiful planet. Let us all act together for creating  a better habitable planet for every living organisms present on this earth.
