Energy Crisis in Our World and India's Response to it

by Khushi Chindaliya | 10-09-2020 14:48

Hello Everyone! This is my first report as an Ambassador. Hope you enjoy!

Most of the world¡¯s energy demands are met by limited natural resources like fossil fuels. This, in turn, puts a huge strain on the resource and leads to its depletion. Increasing world population, over consumption of energy and poor infrastructure further aggravates the problem. According to a report, 90% of the world's energy demands are still met with coal, oil and gas (Raval and Hook).

It is important to realize that energy efficiency is not only crucial to protect the environment but also to facilitate economic growth. Thus, there is a stark requirement for countries across the world to look at alternative green sources of energy and progress towards sustainable development.

In India, efforts for energy conservation have been made by introducing policy interventions and multiple government schemes to promote renewable sources of energy as well as decentralizing commercial coal mining (has increased efficiency of power generation and reduced chronic blackouts across the country). The government is also collaborating with the country's top educational institutions to implement cost-effective solar power solutions and promote use of renewable sources of energy.

Today, the village Appapur, in India, that had no source of power in the past is thriving as a ¡°solar village¡± and serving as a model of new age village for rural localities across the country (Martin). Today, I see that solar panels are set up in the homes of almost all my neighbors and we meet most of our household energy requirements through solar energy. However, there is still a long way to go for the country to become energy efficient. To sustain a 8% growth in the country, the primary energy supply needs to be increased by three to four times. To ensure sustainable growth, the government must focus on developing a capacity building program for low carbon power generation. In my opinion, the government should dedicate more resources towards ensuring efficient utilization of alternate sources of energy, proper implementation of schemes and fund green innovations to facilitate the change.

Turning off electric appliances when not using them, carpooling, changing our vehicles to bicycles, keeping ourselves aware about energy crisis are some simple ways in which we can contribute at an individual level. It is important for us to recognize that the energy crisis is a crucial challenge requiring immediate solution and support our governments to realize the change.
