Free Report: Will Artificial Intelligence be game Changer for Climate Change in near future??

by Sandhya Adhikari | 04-09-2020 21:02

Climate change  and global warming is the pressing global challenge of the humanity. The effect of the global warming are felt more and more across the globe. This important issue has been paid global attention with some of the global movements like Extension Rebellion, Friday For Future which have repeatedly caused disruption by protesting across the globe. The method to combat climate issue has been slow to develop separating garbage into recycle and general waste . there are still high advanced technology like sonar panels, and wind turbines which is out of reach to many due to their high cost and space required for installations.  However the technology like Artificial Intelligence have a bigger and multihued impact in the fight against climate change. Artificial intelligence is an area of computer that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machine that works and react like humans which can be used in many areas like computing, speech recognition, Bio-informatics, Humanoid robot, computer software, climate data analysis and prediction and aeronautic¡¯s etc. The technology is being applied to a wider range of different applications from automobiles vehicles to advanced cyber security that threat detection as well used in satellite imagery for combating the climate issue.

The renaissance of Artificial Intelligence of recent year has led many to ask how this technology can help in combating greatest threat in humanity i.e Climate change. Many researcher has contributed their valuable contribution in the scientific world in disseminating knowledge about the artificial intelligence in reducing this crises. Various researcher added that AI is no sliver bullet at all, but it will prove invaluable in the coming climate fight. The use of AI and machine learning visualize to monitor the environment using data analysis to find inefficiencies in emission heavy industries, and using AI model complex system, like earth¡¯s own climate, so that we can take better precautions tomorrow. Technology alone is not enough since the technology itself is creating a barrier and contributing in the enhancement of the carbon pool.

Here are some of the activities associated with AI for combating global issue:

1. Building Better electricity Systems: The energy system are awash with a lot of data out of which few or little are used  to take advantage of the action and information. AI and machine learning will definitely help by forecasting electricity generation and demand which give proper information to the suppliers to integrate renewable resources and reduce waste.

2. Monitor agriculture emission and deforestation:

Power points plants and engine are not only responsible for the green house gas emission, a great amount comes from destruction of trees, peatland and other forms of plant that has accumulated carbon during the process of photosynthesis over millions of years. The release of the carbondioxide back in the atmosphere are caused by the deforestation and unsustainable agriculture, but with the help of AI and satellite imagery  we can pinpoint where actually this is happening and can protect these natural carbon sinks.

3. prediction of the extreme weather phenomenon: In the coming decade it is absolutely agreed and confirmed that the devastating effect of climate change will be driven by hugely complex systems such as change in cloud cover and ice sheet dynamics. And AI will be digging this problems  in the near future. For instance, with AI and machine learning based algorithms  identifies tropical cyclones, hurricanes, other weather phenomenon and with the help of AI could assist to reduce the potential damage.

4. Create New low carbon materials: Global carbon emission has been enhanced due to various anthropogenic effect on the planet. AI helps to develop low carbon alternatives to these materials by assisting scientists to model the properties and interactions of never before seen chemical compounds.

5. Reduce and make transportation more efficient: Alone the transportation system accounts for the quarter of global energy related co2 emission, with two thirds of this generated by road users. AI and machine learning inhibits the number of energy wasted journeys, increasing vehicle efficiency and sifting freight to low carbon option.

Others:

Reduces the wastes energy from buildings, geoengineer a more reflective earth so as to reflect more of the sun¡¯s heat back to the space,  and most importantly give individual tools to minimize carbon footprint as Machine learning helps in calculating an individual carbon foot print and flagging minimal change they could make to reduce it. Thus still an AI is more to be explored, the concept of AI is not as simple as we had taken, still there is the major question that will the intelligent robots replace human in all difficult, cumbersome jobs and professions as part of progress of civilization? But in the context of climate change it will be a silver lining in near future.
