Monthly event (Earth Overshoot Day)

by Asmita Gaire | 31-08-2020 17:01

1. Measure what you treasure
The calculation of Earth Overshoot Day is an illustrative calendar date. It reflects on humanity's resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth¡¯s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term "overshoot" means the level by which human population overshoots the sustainable amount of resources on Earth.

I also took a quiz to calculate my personalized Overshoot Day. I measured what I treasure by this overshoot day quiz. I found if everyone in this universe live like me, they we will need 1.4 Earths. It means Earth will take 1 years and 4 months to regenerate the resources we utilize in a year. Or human beings utilize 60% more resources than can be renewed. Unfortunately, we do have only 1 Earth to live on. I was therefore worried by this result. At the same time, in general at this current rate, we are using up our Earth's resources as if we had 1.6 Earths. My personal quiz has built a hope that from 1.6 Earths; if everyone like me lives than we can reduce to 1.4 Earth and gradually we will come back to 1 Planet with better condition in near future.

With the growing awareness and changing lifestyle through Eco friendly activities, I believe my quiz on overshoot day for the next time will get better with better utilization of resources on Earth.
