Sparrows

Sparrow¡¯s are considered as a nuisance species so it is not authorized as illegal if anybody kill them. They are taken just as a bird in almost every country but I think they should deserve more importance. Sparrow plays a significant role in ecosystem balance and food web stabilization. Sparrows are abundant near human habitations. Every year the population of sparrows are declining. I recall those past years when I used to see them bathing in the ponds. The chirping tune would be the first sound which I used to heard while I used to be in bed in the morning. But now days the things are different. I haven¡¯t seen any sparrows in past 2-3 years. They are dying rapidly every day every year. Sparrow have more economic importance than other birds in comparison. The sparrows support our ecosystem. Most of the species of insects taken are harmful to agriculture. The sparrows feed on them. They act as a scavenger and also helps in seed dispersion and pollination.

We celebrate World Sparrow Day, on March 20 annually, to raise awareness about conserving the sparrow population. So, why do we need to safeguard them, you might ask. Here are some reasons why the population of sparrows are decreasing.

  • Felling of trees
  • Lack of cavity nesting
  • Absence of native plants
  • Absence of hedgerows
  • Contemporary landscaping
  • Widespread use of concrete
  • Chemical fertilizers in agricultural produce
  • Cell phone radiation

We weren¡¯t serious about them, not even a little. So, we had to face the Locust invasion. Sparrows do sometime eat and destroy our crops but what we don¡¯t realize is that the sparrow while eating some grain, kept a watchful eye over the fields and held other vermin like the locust at bay. With the birds out of the way, the locust swarm invaded the grain fields with abandon, creating an ecological disaster across Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh and even in some parts of Nepal causing a devastating loss in crop yield. The thing is that we take them as granted, they will survive them self. But it isn¡¯t true as they support us, they also need us some time. So kindly grew some feelings for them and help them once again to fly in the sky.
