[Monthly Event] Earth Overshoot day

by Bal krishna Pandey | 20-08-2020 16:46

1. My ecological footprint and overshoot day
I wanted to measure my overshoot day in two parts, Before COVID 19 pandemic and during pandemic. This is because globally our daily living habits have been changed significantly.

Before Pandemic
If everyone live in the same way as I did in the days before the lock down caused by COVID 19 pandemic, we would need 2.2 Earth and my personal Earth overshoot day is 17 June. In the same situation, my ecological footprint (global hectares) is 3.7; my carbon footprint (CO2 emissions in tonnes per year) is 5.2 and carbon footprint (percentage of my total ecological footprint) is 48. You may find this result quite shocking but not surprising for me. This may be because I used to travel a long distance and consume packaged food more. In addition, one of the reason may be my single living habit.

During pandemic
If everyone is living the same ways as I do during this pandemic situation, we need just one Earth and there would be no overshoot day. My personal overshoot day is 16 December; my ecological footprint (global hectares) is 1.8; my carbon footprint (CO2 emissions in tonnes per year) is 2.3 and carbon footprint (percentage of my total ecological footprint) is 45. I think this is a good result for me. I am living with my parents now, I consume raw and self-cultivated crops and vegetables, I do not waste food and I try to minimize my daily needs. In addition, I am not travelling anywhere and prefer walk in short distance.

It is not possible to live in future as I practice today, but I can change my some of the habits to make me an Eco-friendly human being. I decided to consume raw and non packaged food at every possible time, to walk in possible distances, use public transport rather than personal bike or car, use renewable energy sources, and consume more plant-based products. I always follow reduce, recycle and reuse rules.

2. I jump in front of the camera

I have created my video selfie by following the template provided on http://www.overshootday.org/portfolio/i-jump-in-front-of-the-camera/ and posted on YouTube and Instagram.

I am Bal Krishna.
I will be 54 in 2050.
I want a society where there is a greenery, pollution free environment and no conflict between human and wildlife.

I also inspired some children and youths to participate in the campaign ¡°I jump in front of the Camera¡± and ask them post in social media. After receiving their personal selfie videos, I made a final video, which represents the voice of three children and twelve youths. Eco generation members Susma Thapa and Paras Kunwar are also featured in the video. I want to thank all the energetic people for their support to celebrate the event.
