Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 13

Climate Action

This goal comes under environment pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about taking urgent action to combat climate change and it's impacts.

No one can deny this, very relevant and happening issue i.e. climate change. Global warming is very visible which is one of the effect of climate change.

The targets for this goal are:
1. Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters
2. Integrate climate change measures info national policies, strategies and planning
3. Improve education, awareness raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and the early warning of climate hazards

The indicators to measure this goal are:
1. Green house has emission from Agriculture sector
2. Climate Smart Village
3. Climate Smart Farming
4. School covered by climate change education.
5. Number of trained person in climate change adaptation.

The strength for Nepal to achieve these targets are:
Nepal ratified the Paris Agreement during the 21st session of UNFCC and made Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). Nepal prepared and implemented NAPA and LAPA. Policies and programmes prepared for action against climate change in the 15th year plan.

However, Nepal has still weakness regarding lack of visionary state policies. Higher dependency on fossil fuels. Chaotic development activities and combating climate change is most relevant yet action is more dependent on other countries. Nepal is situated between two developed countries like India and China which has also put Nepal into vulnerable condition on climate change due to activities from neighbouring countries. Condition is similar to other developing countries too.

Nepal has focused in rain water harvesting, climate smart village, conservation agriculture and intensification on green agriculture.

We don't have any planet B to live in, and we must not take this beautiful planet in which we are living as granted.
