Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 14

Life below water

This goal comes under environment pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources for Sustainable Development.

Nepal is a landlocked country. So, this goal is not relevant in Nepal.

However, I will be addressing about it in the worldwide perspective.
The targets for this goal are:
- By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
- By 2030, increase the economic benefits to small island developing stated and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism
-Enhance the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources by implementing international laws as reflected which provides the legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources, as recalled in paragraph 158 of the future we want.

The indicators for this goals are
1. Index of coastal eu-trophication and floating plastic debris density
The drastic reduction in the human activity is seen during this time of COVID19. We may take this time as a time when an ocean is taking time for healing.

However, over 30% of marine habitats have been destroyed. SDG is more likely to have a negative impact on forest resources as mangrove and directly or indirectly in people relying on those forests and systems governed by the forests because it focuses primarily on fisheries, potentially excluding other coastal natural resources. Governance challenge increase the likelihood that SDG 14 will have negative impacts on coastal forests.

But, we still have some strengths to overcome these weaknesses. Addressing marine pollution aids in acheiving other Sustainable goals such as, SDG 02 (reduce hunger), SDG 03(Good health and well being), SDG-6 (Clean water and Sanitation), SDG 12( Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG-15 (Life on Land).

For this, we have to make a sustainable strategies. Sustainable fisheries should be promoted. Sustainable fisheries policy have to be highlighted and marine ecosystem should be highlighted for preservation.
