Only you can prevent forest fires

In a forest of movies, you might not see the wood. If you are an environmental friendly movie buff, who would like to explore the world from your own living room, this post might be for you.

As I told you before, I find fascinating those 1001 movies you have to watch before dying lists. They always include those oldies but goodies romantic comedies like Ghost, the blockbuster thrillers like Shutter Island and a good film to cry a river The Green Mile. However, there¡¯s always a misrepresentation of environmental friendly movies. Despite of the tremendous importance that green films have acquired, they seem to not belong to the hall of fame among Dirty Dancing, Moonlight, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Finding Neverland and Toy Story. Not even nowadays, when the environmental controversy has caught attention, we can see an environmental movie in the run for the academy awards along Parasite, Little Women, Jojo Rabbit and Joker. Today, I will be taking you in a journey Into the Woods to learn more about deforestation and the protection of our forests!

IF A TREE FALLS (2011)

Directed by Marshal Curry and Sam Cullman, with the writing of Curry and Matthew Hamacheck and the starring of Daniel McGowan, Lisa McGowan and Tim Lewis, this 85 minutes film will take a look at the actions of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), a radical group of environmentalists. If a Tree Falls examines the group¡¯s history and actions, while paying particular attention to Daniel, who was charged by the FBI in connection to arson and other activities of the ELF.

THE BURNING SEASON (2008)

This Australian masterpiece of Cathy Henkel, which is narrated by Hugh Jackman, gets to know the activities of Dorjee Sun, an Australian entrepreneur, who wants to provide an alternative to the slash-and-burn farming of Indonesia. The 89 minutes documentary follows him as he looks to find backers for a carbon trading plan in the forest, a small local farmer and a woman running an orangutan sanctuary. When all are brought together, what will be the results?

THE FORGOTTEN DISTRICT (2008)

The Forgotten District is a 70 minutes film, directed by Oliver Dickinson, which focuses on the local efforts of a Mayan community in Belize to preserve the environmental balance. The Mayan people of the community of Toledo have been running an ecotourism business for over two decades. Left in poverty by governmental disputes, The Forgotten District shows how resourceful people have leveraged the beauty of their culture and environment to both provide a living and preserve a way of life.

FORBIDDEN FOREST (2004)

A Canadian, 70 minutes, artwork of Kevin W. Matthews, with the co-writing of Jonathan Collicott, follows Jean Guy Comeau and Francis Wishart to the forest while they lobby for more responsible forestry practices. While some people might think of Canada as nothing but ice and snow, there are significant stretches of boreal forests and conditions in recent years have caused large and dangerous forest fires on a regular basis.
