The Cordillera de Colan National Sanctuary, Peru

by Kevin Lopez | 16-08-2020 02:26

The Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary (SNCC) is located north of the Tropical Andes of Peru. It is a natural area protected by the Peruvian State, that means that through the Service of Protected Natural Areas of Peru (SERNANP), different areas of great biological, cultural and historical importance of the country are protected.
The SNCC protects species that are endemic (that is, they only live in this region) and some are in danger of extinction. Among the most charismatic are: the yellow-tailed woolly monkey, the Andean night monkey, the spectacled bear, the mustachioed owl, among others.
Its main landscapes are montane forests and pajonales or punas. In its almost 40 thousand hectares of extension, important water reserves are conserved that provide this ecosystem service to thousands of families of farmers who live in the Buffer Zone and the Influence Zone of the Sanctuary.
Protecting these important spaces for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem resources of many families is vital. For this reason, environmental education activities and promotion of environmentally friendly agriculture and livestock is important to achieve change in the local environmental culture.
I am a park ranger for the SNCC and with my work and that of my colleagues, we help reduce the negative impacts that may affect the health of the Colán forests.
In the following articles that I will be writing, I would like to share with you the activities we carry out to achieve this goal.
