Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 11

Sustainable Cities and Communities

This goal comes under Equity pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Some of the targets for this goal are:
1. Safe and affordable housing
Indicators:
- people living in slum to be reduced to 125 by 2030
- safe house for the people is targeted from 20.8% now to 60% by 2030

2. Affordable and sustainable transport system
Indicator:
- Availability of safe public transport for all from 0.1% to 50% by 2030

3. Reduce the adverse effect of natural disaster
Indicators:
- death due to disaster
- injuries due to disaster

By 2019, household with thatch straw roof is 15.3% in 2019, which is targeted to reduce to 9.7% by 2025. Household living in safe house is 41.1% in 2020, which is targeted to 48.7% by 2030. Access to road within 30 minutes of walk is among 82% in 2020.

There are several strengths and weakness for the achievement of this goal. The strengths are; the concept of sustainability and inclusiveness in development is widespreaded. Provision of safe and security of human life, properties and culture is highlighted, and coordination and linkages of different levels is also focussed.
However, lack of enough resources, unmanaged governance and lack of accurate data is hindering it's achievement.

For this proper strategies is must. Land use policy has to be set up. Implementation of new urban agenda habitat is must. Replacement of people from vul eravke to disaster safe area is must. Priority of transportation in long 25 years plan 2100 must be included. Transportation has to be considered as driver of changes. East-west highway has to be standardized, making it 4 or 8 lane. Also, roads has to be made evergreen at least 75% of the road.

Since the Sustainable Development Goals is achievable when every people have safe, resilient and sustainable human settlement. Let's move forward leaving no one behind.
