Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 09

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

This goal comes under Economic pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about building resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. The three targets of this goal are:

1. Develop sustainable, resilient and inclusive infrastructures
An indicator of this target is Road density. It is targeted to increased to 1.3 km/sqkm which is just 0.59 km/sqkm till now. Similarly, another indicator for this goal is paved road density which is targeted to increase to 0.25 km/sqkm, which is just 0.047 km/sqkm till now.

2. Promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization
This target takes indicator as industry's share in GDP of the country targeted to 25% which is 13.5% in 2019. It also takes another indicator i.e. manufacturing employment as a proportion of total employment to the target of 13% which is already 12% in 2019.

3. Increase access to financial services and markets
This target takes proportion of small and middle scale industries as an indicator with target of 30% by 2030, among which small scale industries have share of 5.8% and middle scale industries of 14.2% contribution in 2019.

The targets are not difficult to achieve. However, steady action, lack of coordination, weak governance and lack of raw materials, proper datas, skilled manpower and stable policies from government is hindering it's achievement. For this SMART plan is must which means specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound plan. High priority has to be given to the SDGs project by government with inclusive government and private bodies involvement. Similarly, improvement of annual plan policy for SDG is must. It's good that private sectors are paying much attention towards achievement of this goal.

That's why, strong strategies is very necessary. These strategies could be increase in production and productivity; rapid, sustainable and employment oriented industrial growth; investment friendly laws, and reorientation of resources. Rural and Urban development has to be taken in a together way. Every kinds of activities has to be decided by the involvement of people since they are the one with better ideas on necessity of  activities, and it's impact on them and environment. This goal may have negative impact in environment if not carried out with proper policies. So, everyone from their place has to be aware about it and take action accordingly.
