Thematic Report : Environment and me

by Sandhya Adhikari | 13-08-2020 04:21

¡°Environment are the blanket of the house that keep the life on the planet sage and sound¡±.  Our connection to the environment is so interrelated, that our life is defined by what is around us and what we find in front of us. This has been a pattern since primates stoop up in his feet and become Homo erectus.  And the relation of mine with environment is so deep, my inclination for this environment and planet enhanced more since I joined this platform. The morning dew, warble and melodious voice of cuckoo, rain drops, peaceful aura of forest and nature  ever enchant and arrest my inner string of heart. The thematic topic of this month is quite interesting, Environment and Me, we feel for the environment, we contribute for the environment and our concern for the environment is so high that page and paper couldn¡¯t just include them.

I am not only the one who has been lockdown since 4 month. This period has been toughest time for many of us but when  it comes to me then this time has been one of my memorable time which has given me more that what it has taken from me. It has given me the time to myself that I didn¡¯t get any chance before to know me, enjoy with me, this has given a time to learn more responsibility from parents, experiences from the situations. All in one this period has been a learning period and all life memorable period.

Along with this, this time had taught me the true essence of environment. Let me describe my act for this environment. On everyone¡¯s birthday those who are close to my heart I plant a tree as well I had used plant as a gift to them rather unnecessary candies and other gifts. Similarly back to 3 month ago I had visited one site where there is major deforestation and unmanaged soil extraction from the particular land, those every images just scattered my heart. I just return back to my home and talked with my mother about the situation, she tied to calm my anger and my furious anger, those incident has let me to insomnia for some days and finally I came with a conclusion to plant a tree, but the problem was there from where to buy the trees for plantation and its not that easy and I am not financially able enough to bear all the expenses during this COVID-19 crises. Often said when there is will in your brain there is millions of way, since I am from Agriculture background in studies so I plan to raise my own saplings with the knowledge that I got during my college period I brought a seed from the  trees near to me and raised seeds on the seed bed. My parents has ever supported me on my every works. My that decision has also been supported by my parents. After successful germination of seedling I had transplanted them on the polythene bags for their proper growth and development. Everyday they were given water and shade and those babies grew so calmly. I am so delight to share with you all that now the saplings are ready for transplantation. Me along with my parents are planning to plant those saplings in deforestation prone area. I had also got many calls for contact to sell the saplings to them for plantation in their respective area. Since we are going to plant on the forest area so I had used those type of plant which give fruits for birds and one of them is ¡°Kadam¡± which I had selected. Due to lockdown situation we couldn¡¯t go out and do plantation but as soon as this crises ends we will plant 500 plants  at one spot. I hope that this act will bring a change on the environment and those scars that are left on the mother earth will heal to some extent. Deforestation has been one of the major problem not only in my community but also in maximum place, so I hope that plantation will restore the nature scenario, helps the living form to enjoy their habitat and make the environment best suited for living..

Addition to this,  Do you know the sanitary product used during period consists of 90% plastics? Period products such as tampons, sanitary pads, sanitary napkins are predominantly made from massive plastics, which makes even harder for them to be broken down and degrade when mixed with sewage. According to the research what they have found that one pack of the sanitary pad is equivalent to quantity of plastic as four carried bag and we know plastics takes nearly 500 years for their decomposition. Now imagine, it has been estimated that the average women will dispose 11,000 sanitary product approximately 200kg menstrual product in her lifetime, now imagine half of the world population is female. Furthermore 8% of all waste that enter water treatment comes from the period waste as described by Water UK. Menstrual product has a great impact on the climate too which leaves carbon footprint of 5.3 kg Co2 equivalent. So in this lockdown I had tried to seek alternative to this problem so from youtube I learned to make sanitary pad from clothes which is easy to make, comfortable to use and eco friendly as  well as best from health point of view. Now it a turn to pass our period day without using those plastic and leaving our footmarks to environment. Reducing period waste is not just a care of throwing used sanitary products in the bin rather than the toilet but using alternative method to make period as a plastic free period.pad made with clothes

These are my action for the environment, hope it enhance ecological footprint in the environment.

Green cheers!!!
