World Elephant Day 2020

by Sonika Pariyar | 12-08-2020 22:02

Elephants are largest existing land animal. Elephans(Loxodonta) are mammals of family Elephantidea. August 12 is celebrated as World Elephant day which has been created to bring the world together. It is a day to honour elephants,to spread awareness about the  critical threats they are facing , and to support positive solutions that will help ensure their survival .

While some populations of Africans elephants are secure and expanding ,primarily in Southern Africa ,numbers are continuing to fall in other areas ,particularly in central Africa and parts of East Africa. With an  415,000 elephants left on the continent ,the species is regarded vulnerable, although certain populations are being poached towards extinction. Asian Elephants numbers have dropped by at least 50% over the last three generations, and they are still in decline today .With only 40,000-50,000 left in the wild ,the species is classified as endangered. It is very important  conserve both African and Asian Elephant since they play important role in their ecosystem as well contributing towards tourism and community income in many areas(In Nepal, Elephant Riding in Chitwan national Park can be prefect example). So,it is our duty to conserve their habitat, supporting local communities ,and making sure natural resources are available for upcoming generation.

WWF has been working to conserve elephants on both continent through specific programmes that aim to improve elephant protection and management, build capacity within range states ,mitigate human -elephant conflict ,reduce poaching and illegal ivory trade.
