Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 08

Decent Work and Economic Growth

This goal comes under Economic pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Under SDG 08, there are total 10 targets.
Four targets among them are:
1. The per capita economic growth in accordance with national circumstances and, in particular, at least 7% Gross Domestic Product growth per annum in the least developed countries.

The strength for this target is,
Increase in GDP implies increment in purchasing power of products. More capital will flow towards the government and also helps in improving good life standard of the people.

2. By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and equal pay for work of equal value.

It promotes indistinctive employment scope for all gender. It promotes fair value of labor, reduction in sexual labour, exploitation, peer job opportunity for handicapped people as well.

3. By 2030, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training.

Skill based training and education helps people become self-employed and also helps in the increment of GDP.

4. By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that created jobs and promotes local culture and products.

Consumption of local products is increased. It enhances employment opportunities and eco-friendly industrialization. Economic Growth is enhanced that promotes increase in GDP.

Certain indicators for this SDG are:
1. Per capita income is targeted to increased to 7% by 2030 which is 3.6% in 2019.
2. Unemployment rate among (15-59) years is targeted to decrease to 10% which is 23.1% in 2019.
3. Youth unemployment rate is targeted to decrease to 10% by 2030 which is 28.8% in 2019.
4. Annual number of jobs in tourism industries is targeted to increase to 1000 which is 332.7 in 2019.

However, certain weakness that hinders in the achievement of this SDG targets are:
1. Problems may arise due to unstable influence in the labor, capital and entrepreneurship.
2. Increase in number of population also affects the per capita income
3. Lack of remuneration for several workers and basis for allocation of remuneration is found to be unequal.
4. Utilization of educated youth in employment generation activities is insufficient. There's not even distribution of job opportunities and training to the youths.
5. Lack of sustainable policies and programs for the extension of tourism.
6. Lack of accomodations, transportation, communication and other essential facilities in the high hills and mountain areas.
7. Lack of publicity and advertisement for the promotion of tourism in remote areas.

Globally, 201 million people are unemployed of which 71 million are young women and men. Incase of Nepal, 3.88% of employed adolescents are engaged in hazardous work. 500,000 people enter the market every year. 1.25% is the total unemployment rate out of which 1.21% are female unemployment rate.

Generational of employment opportunities is must for overall growth. Ensuring job is not only sufficient, but the job has to be decent ensuring job safety and proper remuneration. If it's done then only the path towards sustainable development goals 08 would be smooth and attainable.
