[Monthly Event] - 8.22 Earth OverShoot Day (Measure What You Treasure)

by Justice Obiri | 08-08-2020 12:25

As usual, this noble platform never disappoints when it comes to events to help heal and save mother earth. This month we take a bold journey to know what we are individually doing to either help earth survive or aid in its demise. To make this a reality, I had to answer a series of questions and per my answers I gave out, an overview of what I do and the way it makes or unmake the earth was calculated and given to me.

I had to be as sincere as I could be and the results I had wasn't that encouraging but the good thing about is that, "I can still make a difference by letting go some of the things I do that harms the environment".
What this event actually does is that, it gives us a clear idea of the things we do that harms the environment that we do not even know. Examples could be the food we consume or the kind of house we live in. It would surprise you to know that this two basic needs of survival actually has a ripple effect on the environment. Yet without this two basic needs life would also be impossible. As a lacto-vegetarian (myself), I consume less packaged food and 0% meat but my carbon emission in tonnes per year was still able to reach 3.2. This is relatively low because the quiz was limited to a specific area.

Suggestions were given at the end of the quiz and actions could be taken by me to help reduce my current CO2 emission in tonnes per year. I was advised to check the food I consume, reduce the consumption rate of electricity in the house (try some renewable means of generating power), and help address population size in my society.

My Personal OverShoot Day is 15th October and if everybody lives like me, we would need 1.3 Earths which is quite lower than the average which is 1.6 Earths.

Considering my current CO2 emission rate, I consider myself to be an epitome of change. I can help move the overshoot date by being pragmatic with the environment. My target is to help reduce air pollutants by the year 2050 when I would be in my 50s.
