by Asmita Gaire | 08-08-2020 21:00

Environment and me!

The fact that we human are entirely dependent on Environment is undeniable. So, I am also the one who is dependent and also inclined towards the environment. I belong to the area where birds and trees outnumber the houses and population. I feel blessed to enjoy this magical birds chanting and fresh air from green trees. Most interestingly, this lockdown has brought me more closer and nearer to the environment. I have been engaging in various Eco friendly activities programmes and many awareness programs. Now, when the things are being virtually done; I am thankful that wherever and whenever it is, I can physically meet and be with the environment. And I don't have to think anything to spend time in environment but now I have to think thousand times before I meet people physically due to pandemic.

These days, I feel better to spend time in garden and field rather than on social media. I surf what the next things can be done in the field. In this process, I did one more trial on the environment.

I am from Nepal and in Nepal we celebrate different festivals. Out of which, tihar is one of the major festival where we worship birds, animals, gods and most importantly our brothers. We prepare garland of Marigold flowers for our brothers. Last year, I was in my university and got home only during vacation of festival and I didn't have much flowers in my garden for garland, and had to buy it. But this year, I am at home, I have time and also I have garden. Then, I tried decorating my garden with Marigold. I could have bought Marigold plants for plantation but I tried the other way for my garden which are cleared in the following steps:

1. I had preserved last year Marigold garland safely. This year, it has completely dried of.
2. I took out the garland I have preserved. Then I separate every dried petals of the flowers and spreaded it on a plate.
3. I had a plastic bottle that was no more in use for storage of things. So, I cut it and put sand at the bottom layer of bottle and top soil on top layer from garden and sprinkled it with water and left it overnight.
4. Next day, I took the dried petals being separated from Marigold flower and sowed it in the bottle with soil. The dried petals had seed of the Marigold.
5. I have looked after the bottle everyday and sprinkled it with water.
6. Luckily, numbers of green plants sprouted from it after few days.
7. After 15 days, I prepared a garden for transplantion.
8. I planted a Marigold in the garden. I supervise it daily and water it. Now it's time for keeping watch on them and wait for the time when it gets blossoms.

I planted 50 Marigold plants and gifted rest Marigold plants to my friends and neighbors. In our Nepalese society, the importance of Marigold is very deep especially when it comes about Tihar/Bhai Tika.

This lockdown has make me realize how beautiful your every morning be when you see the plants you have planted starts getting bigger day by day. It has make me realize more on how materials in own reach can be used to make your surroundings green. It has make me realize that how greenery can be the source for spreading happiness. I have always appreciated environment beauty and I feel lucky that I could add at least little beauty to my environment and to the environment of my friends and neighbors.
