Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 02

Zero Hunger

This goal comes under Economic pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about; end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. If we go through glance in the status of Nepal in context of underweight prevalence; it's 27.4% and 26.7% in females and makes respectively (according to ministry of health, 2017). Similarly, 36% of children below 5 years are stunted (According to WFP-2017-2018). In addition to this, 48% pregnant women are anaemic (According to WFP -2017-2018). Considering these status, Nepal has focused on some targets. These targets are:

1. End hunger by 2030 and ensure access by all people to safe nutrition and sufficient food all year round.
2. Ending all form of malnutrition.
3. Doubling agriculture productivity and income of small scale food producers.

Certain indicators are:
1. Prevalence of undernourishment must be below 5% by 2030.
2. Underweight children below 5 years has to be below 5% by 2030.
3. Anemia naming women of reproduction age and among children. under 5 years has to be below 9% and 6% respectively by 2030.
4. Land productivity must get to 6 metric ton/hectare by 2030.
5. Agricultural insurance coverage (percentage of agricultural households) has to be more than 25% by 2030.

So, to meet this SDG, what are the strength for country like Nepal?
1. Good biodiversity and climatic situation
2. Support from NGOs and INGOs is also enormous
3. Several local organizations are also working on food security and food safety with local level plans implemented by government.
4. In context of Nepal, 67% of land has good irrigation facility for agriculture.
5. Various plans like world food programme, National plan on zero hunger challenge, USAID programs, muktinssctir nutrition plan, and many others are being scheduled.

However, there are still some weakness. They are:
1. Commercial agriculture is not yet flourished.
2. Poor means of transportation and no proper storage facilities.
3. Natural calamities has destroyed the hectares of crop and cultiviable land annually.
4. Changing climate is also affecting in the rainfall pattern that has cause huge loss of crops.

In the end, the world has enough production for human consumption or for the fulfilment of basic foods. However, in some places food doesn't reach the table while in some places food ends up in the bin. This is causing number of lives to sleep with an empty stomach every night. 1 in 9 children sleeps hungry every night. What do you think hunger is?

In my opinion, it's a logistic problem that has got converted into pandemic form. Most of the health related illness occur due to malnutrition or over nutrition or due to food adulteration. This is a catastrophe. But we can bring this to end. Let's buy only the amount that we need. Let's help the helpless and homeless. Let's be generous and contribute as much as we can from our side.
