Sustainable Development Goals: Targets, Achievements, Strategies and Future Strategies in context of Nepal

Sustainable Development Goals 03

Good health and well being

This goal comes under Economic pillar of Sustainable Development Goals. I will be addressing about ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all ages.

Good health and well being is the ultimate desire of people. It's the ultimate reason for which people are struggling everyday.
There are diverse targets under this goal.
Out of them, some few targets are:
1. Reducing by 2030, global maternal mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 live births
2. Ending preventable death of newborns and children under 5 years of ages.
3. Ending the epidemic of AIDS, TB, malaria and NTDs and combat hepatitis, water borne disease and others non-communicable disease.

To achieve this goals, certain indicators have been set. These indicators are:
1. Maternal mortality ratio: So far, in context of Nepal maternal mortality rate has been deducted by halves during millennium development goals also. It is targeted to reduce upto 70 by 1 lakhs live birth by 2030.

2. Proportion of birth facilitated by Health Personnel: Generally in many remote areas there is not availability of hospitals, even if it's built, it lacks health professional. So, government has focused on making health professional access, so that the facilities that every child has to get at birth will me available to child and the infant mortality rate is controlled.

3. Registered prevalence rate of leprosy: Government had approached to eliminate leprosy with which was 0.89 per 10,000 population in 2015 and, by now it has been eliminated entirely.

4. Dengue: it was reported in 2005 in Nepal. It is still being prevalent with increased cases. Nepal is working mainly to prevent human from these mosquitoes bite that transmit dengue.

5. Neomortality rate: Government has targeted ,for each 10,000 population, there have to be 1 doctors, nurses and midwives.

In this process, Nepal has certain strength that helps in acheiving the goals. They are:
1. Health education in influential member in the family.
2. Care (prenatal, post natal, preventive care against disease) is adequate.
3. Road construction in rural areas is also been recorded. It helps to make transportation easier or to get access to hospital in vehicles.
4. Anti disease therapy (like antiretroviral therapy) has been started.
5. Exercise of human capabilities and agency.

However, we do have certain weakness.
1. Lack of good records and financial resources and infrastructures
2. Local government has been facing complex challenges
3. Social inequalities.
4. Waste management problems
5. Social protection or security.

Goal number 03 has been quite progressing in Nepal. But, due to Covid-19 pandemic, there has increased the biggest threat and insecurity among people for their good health and well being. Side by side, there is also good aspect, it was recorded the number of patients visiting to hospital is very less. Meaning thereby, people are adopting healthy practices in this period to keep themselves healthy and fit with homemade and handmade food. In addition to this, this pandemic has made people realize the importance of food and most importantly healthy food. Since, most of the disease are mainly due to food that we eat.
