[September Thematic Report] Saudi Arabia's Energy Security

by Baekjin Kim | 01-10-2023 06:13

Energy security is a prominent issue that every country advocates and struggles to find. As the world entered the 21st century, energy was essential for developing the country. However, resources were limited and scarce. Only the countries with sufficient energy were able to distribute them. However, they are also running out of resources, and other countries are trying to find other renewable sources. One of the countries is my host country, Saudi Arabia. They have a vast desertland, where massive amounts of oil and natural resources are buried. Despite those advantages, they are now running out of resources, and are in focus on securing their energy.

Initially, they have launched the new VISION 2030 project, where they are planning to make Saudi Arabia a better country that does NOT rely on the resources that they have. They have developed the NEOM city, where they are building new places such as ¡°The Line¡±, ¡°Oxagon¡±, etc. They have been implementing all their efforts to decrease their reliance on oil and ultimately preparing for the post-oil era. Using various entertainment services such as Sports, Culture, Tourism, and Recreation, the country is reshaping itself into a better nation.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia has been focusing on energy sustainability in the future world. According to Aramco, they have been advocating for the change in sustainability and energy security, to ultimately lower the carbon sources of energy. Furthermore, to develop their nation, Saudi Arabia has been developing numerous projects to supply energy to the whole country. One example could be the Jafurah Project. In the area named Jafurah Basin, tons of natural gas are buried under the desert, and Aramco and the outer companies, are building a new power plant to discover the future energy.

Lastly, Saudi Arabia has been putting endless efforts into developing the country and securing their energy. Not only they have provided oil to numerous countries, but they are now in the stage of developing their nation and in the process of discovering new renewable energy sources.
