How Some Corporations are Going Green

by Jenn Lee | 31-07-2020 04:40

Now more than ever, it is important to help the planet stay as clean and healthy as possible. While individuals can take steps to go green on a personal level, large corporations can do more than anyone else to ensure that the Earth stays clean and livable for as long as possible.

CORSIA

Airplanes and helicopters take tons of fuel to stay aloft, so they are one of the top contributors to transportation pollution. However, in 2018, the aviation industry, along with 73 countries worldwide, put a plan in place to put a cap on carbon emissions in airborne vehicles. This agreement is known as CORSIA, and it will take effect around the world between the years 2021 and 2027. It is the first global agreement to reduce pollution that affects the entirety of a single industry, and the leaders of the movement are hopeful that it will help create a healthier future for the planet.

Paper Usage

Companies, schools, households, and almost all other establishments use obscene amounts of paper every year. Paper products make up approximately 40% of all landfill waste, so cutting paper usage is one massively helpful way to reduce waste. One example of a company severely cutting paper waste is Bank of America. Over the past five years, Bank of America has managed to reduce the amount of paper it uses by almost a third. Hopefully, other businesses will follow in the footsteps of Bank of America and move more of their paperwork to a digital format.

Electric Vehicles

Several car manufacturers now sell electric vehicles at rates competitive to gas-powered vehicles when you take into consideration tax write-offs and incentive programs. The main environmental benefit of electric cars is that they do not pollute the air with exhaust fumes. Electric engines are becoming more viable by the year, and it is only a matter of time before electric cars become more economical than gas-powered cars. Tesla is leading the charge when it comes to electric vehicles having already released nine different models of all different specs and price ranges with more on the way.

Kitchen Appliances

Restaurants use a lot of energy in their kitchens between ovens, fans, freezers, and anything else they needed to keep the food fresh and well-cooked. Fast-food chains have always heavily relied on efficiency to get the food from the kitchen to the customers as quickly as possible, but now companies like McDonald's are using that philosophy to the advantage of the environment. McDonald's has been able to cut the amount of energy wasted in stores by 25%, and they are adding electric vehicle chargers to several locations around the world in the name of promoting environmental health and safety.

Recycling

Even if some companies cannot find a way to reduce the amount of waste they produce, they can still recycle the waste they produce instead of sending it to the landfill. Dell has come up with a unique recycling plan to safely and efficiently dispose of everything. Dell also allows customers to send back old appliances they do not use anymore so that the company can dispose of them in the same way. Dell's proactiveness in allowing customers to participate in the recycling process solidifies it as one of the most environmentally conscious companies functioning today.

Earth is the only planet we have until someone figures out how to colonize the moon, so everyone needs to do his or her part to take care of the planet. With companies like the ones mentioned above setting examples, hopefully, everyone will come to realize how important it is to protect the planet humans call home.
